MEETUP: SEO on the Wild Side

January 10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Black Hat SEO

Are your competitors pushing the edges with black hat SEO techniques?

In our January meetup we’re going to talk about Black Hat SEO, what it is and how to spot it.

Not all black hat techniques are problematic, it’s how they are done that makes them black hat as opposed to legitimate SEO strategies.

We’ll also talk about how some black hat techniques can be done in a white hat way.

Tiered Link Building

Black Hat Tiered Link Building:

Typically automated spam backlinks from websites designed only for the purpose of linking back to the websites that have backlinks back to your site. This is easy for Google to see and it will deindex these sites pretty quickly.

White Hat Tiered Link Building:

Content links from authority websites, forums or directories to websites that link to you. You can also link directly back to your website.

Private Blog Networks (PBN)

Black Hat PBN:

There are many services out there that will spin up a PBN for you for fairly cheaply. DON’T DO IT. These PBN’s leave big footprints in terms of registration, hosting and backlinks.

I’ll show you some examples of what this looks like and how to spot the footprints.

White Hat PBN:

PBN’s can be done in a white hat way, but they will almost always violate Google’s Terms of Service (TOS). We’ll talk about how this can be done, but it’s a lot of time and effort and may not be helpful.

Paid Links

Black Hat Paid Links:

Black hat paid links are bought on black hat forums, Fiverr and other sites. These links are usually spammy and drop off after a few weeks or a few months. These backlinks will hurt your backlink profile fairly quickly.

White Hat Paid Links:

Keep in mind that buying any backlink is against Google’s TOS. The white hat difference is that you are included on a resource page of a high authority site and your resource has good value to the reader.
